The Museum Club at the New York State Museum is a
free, educational after-school program for Albany
children between the ages of 8 and 14. Daily
programs incorporate art, science, history and
math and use Museum exhibits, the school
curricula of participating students and current
events. A tutor is available daily to help with
school homework assignments. There are always two
projects going on simultaneously, one of which is
focused on the arts. Arts-based projects are
diverse in nature: Artists-in-residence worked
with Club members to create masks and paintings
for a local art gallery; children created a quilt
exhibition shown in conjunction with the display
of the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt; and
students made wooden puppets and created poetry
and rap related to archaeological digs. This
program builds on children's initial attraction
to the Museum, encourages their curiosity and
provides a special safe "home" for
participants. The program anticipates expanding
to provide opportunities for older teens.
