The Inner Voices program provides visual and
performing arts programs for young people in four
of Macon's public housing complexes. Macon
Neighborhood Arts, Inc., the host institution of
Inner Voices, was formed in partnership with the
Macon Arts Alliance, the Macon Housing Authority
and the Macon Police Department. After-school
sessions that meet 5 days a week for 3 hours
during the school year begin with tutoring and
are followed by classes in drama, vocal and
instrumental music, drawing, painting, ceramics,
modern dance and jazz. Often these classes
culminate in performances and exhibitions.
Participants also sell their artworks in Macon
and in other cities. Many of the classes use the
arts to raise awareness about drug use, teen
pre-gnancy and AIDS. Some of the classes are
oriented to the African-American community, and
the program exposes children to the best of many
different cultures. Inner Voices also emphasizes
self-discipline, education (including college
campus visits) and peer tutoring and holds
oratorical competitions.
